Dr. Leon D. Fiedler, 86, of 1700 Wuesthoff Dr., Melbourne, Florida passed away October 28, 2016.
He was born December 9, 1929 in Park Falls, Wisconsin, the son of Herbert and Ethel Fiedler. Leon Fiedler received his early education, elementary school and High school in the city of his birth. Dr. Leon D. Fiedler, 86, of 1700 Wuesthoff Dr., Melbourne, Florida passed away October 28, 2016.
He was born December 9, 1929 in Park Falls, Wisconsin, the son of Herbert and Ethel Fiedler. Leon Fiedler received his early education, elementary school and High school in the city of his birth. After completion of High School in 1947 he entered the military, first the Army Air Corps, then the US Air Force, was stationed in multiple locations in the Pacific theater. While participating in Military Medical Air Evacuation flights with the US Air Force he met his future wife 1st Lt. Wilma P. Mercer an Air Force Flight Nurse from Eubank, Kentucky. They were married on 13 December 1951 in Honolulu Hawaii, shortly before his return to Continental US to finish his Military assignment and in preparation to return to continue his education. Wilma joined him at his state side station a few months later. He separated from his Air Force in September 1951 to enter his Pre-Dental education at the University of Wisconsin, at Madison. Two years later they moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he was accepted to Dental School at Marquette University, and where their first son Hans Karl Fiedler was born in 1955. Leon Fiedler graduated with a Doctorate Degree in 1959 and entered the US. Army Dental Corps as a 1st Lt., he had attained the military rank of Master (E7) Sergeant prior to his commissioning. As a Dental Officer he was assigned to Letterman General Hospital while stationed at Letterman, Wilma presented him with their second son, Kirk Dean Fiedler. Over the next 14 years his duties in the Military carried him and his family to multiple states and overseas countries. While stationed at FT Bragg, N.C. in the spring of 1973 he was offered the Chairmanship of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department with the University of Louisville, School of Dentistry. In September of 1973, he and his family separated from the Military to enter academic life with that institution as Full Professor and Chairman of the Department. He served the University of Louisville in that capacity and a short period as Asst. Dean of Hospital Dental Programs until 1994. On retirement from that institution Wilma and he retired to Indian River Colony Club, Melbourne, Florida. His parents Herbert and Ethel Fiedler preceded him in death, He is survived by his wife Wilma M. Fiedler, of (64 years of marriage), his sons Hans Karl Fiedler, wife Terry and daughter Amber of Louisville, and Kirk Dean Fiedler and wife Victoria and daughter Christine Nicole and son, Kirk Ryan Fiedler of Columbia SC. He is also survived by one Sister Lois Jean Fiedler/ Levesconte of San Jose, Calif.
